The SUNY Old Westbury student chapter of the Council of Exceptional Children (CEC) is more than a group of future teachers learning, supporting, and navigating their road to graduation together. They also display an understanding of the mission and social justice focus that SUNY Old Westbury represents.
In October, the CEC members were among the approximately 10,000 who participated in the Autism Speaks Walk at Jones Beach, which was held for the 20th consecutive year this year. The event is one of the largest autism walks in the country, and brings together people on the spectrum, as well as their friends, families and other supporters to raise both money and awareness along the way. The Old Westbury CEC members raised more than $1,600 to help ensure people of all abilities have access to the tools needed to lead ‘their best lives.’
In advance of Thanksgiving, CEC members along with faculty advisor Professor Lina Gilic continued their service-oriented spirit by purchasing, and cooking brunch for families at the Ronald McDonald House by Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center.
