With three different campuses throughout Western New York, Jamestown Community College has taken up the opportunity to support the larger community that surrounds its college.
Students at Jamestown Community College’s Jamestown Campus stepped up and out while collaborating with United Way of Southern Chautauqua County partner agencies for a JCC Day of Service. At the Resource Center, which provides services to individuals with disabilities, students did activities with day habilitation clients. Students also cleaned up the landscaping at the American Red Cross facility and prepared walls for painting a new location for the Chautauqua County Adult Day Care Services. The initiatives, an opportunity for JCC to show its support community organizations, allowed students to experience the immediate impact of their volunteerism.
Dodging a few raindrops on a late October afternoon, professor Chris Reisch and a group of students donned bright orange shirts and yellow hardhats to participate in the New York State Adopt-A-Highway program in Dunkirk. JCC’s North County Center has participated in the program each semester since 2005, cleaning over a mile of Rt. 60. Over the years, the event has taken groups of students, faculty, and staff out of the classrooms and onto the road, providing opportunities for community engagement and bragging rights for the best/most interesting piece of trash collected.
Faculty and staff from JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus in Olean were among 50 volunteers who participated in the “All Aboard for Olean” program. The event, held on National Cleanup Day in September, resulted in the collection of more than 50 bags of garbage from city streets in just two and a half hours.
