With the new year upon us, many high school students and adult learners are looking to tour colleges and universities around the nation. Given that there are over 5,300 colleges to pick from, knowing how institutions match up against one another is important information. Based on the voices of over 170,000 current students, the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings for 2020 are available, with many SUNY schools making the list of over 800 U.S. colleges and universities.
The ranking features the results of the THE US Student Survey, which explores a number of important criteria, including student satisfaction with their experience, interaction with their instructors, and level of engagement with their studies. Data is also collected from a number of sources: the US government’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the US Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid, the College Scorecard, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the THE Academic Survey, and the Elsevier bibliometric dataset. The methodology for the rankings explores four key areas: resources (e.g., finance and faculty per student and research papers per faculty), engagement (e.g., student engagement and recommendation, interaction with teachers and students, and number of accredited programs), outcomes (e.g., graduation rate, value added to graduate salary, debt after graduation, and academic reputation), and environment (e.g., proportion of international students, student diversity and inclusion, and staff diversity).
Updated from last year, this year’s rankings have replaced the “value added to loan default” metric with the “debt after graduation” metric, which is published by College Scorecard. Additionally, graduation rate metrics have from IPEDS’ graduation data to is new Outcomes Measures release. Lastly, a smaller number of ranked institutions were featured this year due to challenges with distributing the student survey and getting respondents to validate their responses.
