The Hudson Valley Community College Student Senate was joined by over 30 students from the Nursing Department and the college’s intercollegiate athletic teams as they packaged and handed out 250 Thanksgiving Meal Kits on Nov. 18. Students and their families were given priority but there was enough food to also serve several families from nearby communities not affiliated with the college.
The kits included a choice of turkey or chicken, fruit, vegetables, milk and eggs. In total, over 450 people were served and more than 3,000 pounds of food was distributed.
All the food provided for the meal kits were purchased with the Nourish New York Initiative, which ensures that surplus food from NY farmers is provided to populations who need them the most.
The Commission on Economic Opportunity in Troy, NY works with the college to purchase, order and deliver the food for the Viking Cupboard – the college’s food pantry – and the organization was instrumental in organizing the giveaway event.
