The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team used their skills on and off the field again this year when during the month of September, the Panthers volunteered at the Special Olympics Fall Classic at Cantiague Park in Hicksville, New York. This is the 11th year that the Panthers have volunteered at the event.
Head coach Rod Stephan, assistant coaches Patrick Shortt and Rich Pecoraro, and baseball team members helped make the event a success for over 300 athletes. The event hosted competitions in a number of sports for the hundreds of athletes who participated. Old Westbury athletes acted as support staff and helped get the athletes ready for competition in a number of ways in and out of the games themselves.
“It is a very rewarding day for all our players and our coaches. It is our favorite day of the year,” commented head baseball coach Rod Stephan.
The 2022 Fall Classic was hosted by the Special Olympics of New York, and the events included softball, soccer, golf, bocce, and cross country.
