Beginning Monday, November 26, SUNY will be pinning stories of giving, service, and kindness originating from each of our 64 campuses and the communities that these schools are a part of.
With over 467,000 students, SUNY consistently takes advantage of the opportunity it has to be a significant impact in communities across New York State. The 30 Days of Giving campaign is a great way to recognize students and community partners involved in the many projects that happen all year round at each SUNY campus and their surrounding communities. The byproduct of taking volunteerism to scale is not only building character in our students themselves as they join our over three million alumni, but also to set an example of impact as the nation’s largest university system.
Alfred State College
Alfred State teamed up with the Greater Allegany County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Allegany and corporate sponsors Swain Ski Resort and Alfred Sports Center to organize, promote, and make this local celebration of Make a Difference Day a reality. The Allegany County Board of Legislators also leant their support issuing a proclamation in support of the event.
The goal for this day was to foster collaboration, providing meaningful help, build authentic relationships, and provide a clear pathway to long-term civic engagement for local students. A larger collaboration of higher education, community based organizations, and businesses are already beginning to plan for the 2nd annual day of service in 2013.
Schenectady County Community College
The students enrolled in SOC 127, Interpersonal and Group Dynamics, created and implemented a service learning experience for Zoller School in Schenectady. The main objectives of this course are for the students to learn interpersonal communication skills and how to facilitate a group. The students conducted this experience over a period of three months.
Zoller School educates 300 students in grades Kindergarten to sixth grade. During the investigation phase, the SCCC students discovered that there was minimal money for sports equipment. The SOC 127 students devised a plan to raise money to buy sports equipment. They collected over $700 by conducting raffles, collecting gift cards, and obtaining money from a bottle collection. The equipment was presented at a school assembly. The principal introduced the SCCC students to the faculty and student body. After, they presented the sports equipment, the students organized and conducted outdoor games for the Zoller students for one hour.
