Members of the Hudson Valley Community College Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa are highly dedicated to volunteer community service, the fourth pillar – scholarship, leadership, fellowship and service – of the national honor society.
Most recently, the group conducted a Book Drive to Benefit Inmates. Michael Galvin, a Business Administration student at HVCC, conceived the project, recognizing that the incarcerated population needs educational resources they can utilize independently. He contacted the library coordinator for the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, who was eager to accept gently-used books.
PTK members placed collection bins around campus and collected more than 1,000 books over five days in mid-October. (Donors were asked not to drop off textbooks, magazines or encyclopedias.) The books were sorted, boxed and delivered to the Greene Correctional Facility in Coxsackie, NY with help from the college’s Central Receiving Department.
In addition to special projects like the Book Drive to Benefit Inmates, PTK members volunteer regularly at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, where they sort and box food for distribution to local food pantries.
