On February 11, dozens of SUNY campuses convened at the Legislative Office Building in Albany’s Empire State Plaza to showcase their individual contributions to their communities as well as SUNY’s collective contributions. SUNY Day is an event where the public, senators, and assemblymen are all welcome to see the latest of what each SUNY campus has to offer. This year’s theme was experiential education.
Generation SUNY is helping bring you a few of those stories in our SUNY DAY 2013 series.
Hudson Valley Community College
How does a career path with a 100 percent job placement or academic transfer rate sound? We were pretty interested, too!
Hudson Valley Community College‘s Respiratory Care Program in the School of Health Sciences focuses on respiratory care, which, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is among some of the fastest growing professions. The job placement rate for graduates has historically been very high as the need for respiratory therapists is expected to increase considerably over the next ten years.
At Hudson Valley Community College’s exhibit, two Respiratory Care Program students showed our team some of the skills that have adopted in the School. They took our pulse rates using only a fingertip (cool!) and showcased the negative effects of smoking cigarettes (gross!). The students also told us how hands-on the Hudson Valley Community College program is.
As it turns out, a large portion of the entire degree is earned through experiential education!
Exposure to real-world medical scenarios begins during the student’s summer term of the first year and continues for the entire second year of study. Clinical experience applies theory to the patient situation; hospital-based teaching and evaluation is done in small groups to promote individual instruction in order to ensure best results.
Hudson Valley Community College has an extensive network of affiliates where students may gain this valuable experiential education. As of 2012, the College is partnered with nearly a dozen healthcare institutions.
The two students in the program that we spoke to are earning their Associates in Applied Science and will be qualified to take select National Board for Respiratory Care Examinations, which qualifies them for a New York State license.
