If you’ve been reading the updates coming from the Office of the Education Pipeline, you know that the work we are doing is like SUNY itself: broad, expansive, and striving to serve every single student in the State of New York. With our diverse programs and initiatives, it’s sometimes easy to get bogged down in the details and miss the “so what?” portion of our stories.
With that in mind, we’ve put together some impressive achievements that we think will show you why you should be paying attention!
#1 – Nationally, 95% of students involved in co-op are hired upon completion of their program and 60% are hired on by their co-op employer
SUNY Works gives students at our nine participating SUNY schools the opportunity for co-op experience at 75 participating business and industry partners. The cooperative education (or co-op) approach is a partnership between students, institutions of higher education, and employers that formally integrates a student’s academic program of study with work experience in cooperating employer organizations. To learn more about SUNY Works, read our intro blog.
#2 – $51 Million
That’s the dollar amount in grant funding the Education Pipeline has procured in collaboration with our partners since 2009. Grant writers at SUNY help to secure money for our various system-wide projects, like a 2012 $14.6M Department of Labor grant to design, implement, and deliver a strategic approach to job training and education for high-need industries in the field of advanced manufacturing. In 2012 SUNY was also awarded $2.9M NSF grant to fund STEM mentorship across the state through linking graduate students with middle school students in high need school districts, as well as a $3.5M Race to the Top grant to advance the field of teacher and school leader education across the state.
#3 – 3,120 Smart Scholars earned 8,738 college credits from 26 colleges and universities state-wide
Participants in the Smart Scholars Early College High School program take part in “dual or concurrent enrollment” programs where they get the chance to accelerate their high school graduation AND earn college credit, thus shortening the time it takes to earn a degree. The results speak for themselves! To learn more, visit the Smart Scholars website.
#4 – New York is 1 of 34 states in the Strive Cradle to Career Network … and the Education Pipeline supports 6 Cradle to Career sites throughout the state
SUNY’s Office of the Education Pipeline has established a series of regional education networks across the state, bringing together partners who are passionate about strengthening children’s opportunities. In partnership with the Strive Cradle to Career Network, SUNY is helping New York’s high-needs and resource-poor communities to adapt a framework for civic infrastructure to serve as the foundation of their cradle to career efforts.
