Here at the Office of the Education Pipeline, our exciting initiatives take us across the state working to provide the best service, future, and education possible to the people of New York, from cradle to career. It’s a big job, but we’re up for the challenge through increased systemness and great partners across the state. With so much happening, one of our biggest challenges is helping people not miss the amazing opportunities across the state!
With that in mind, we are pleased to bring you this regional news update, which will highlight the upcoming events and developments connected to the Education Pipeline. This update will focus on the extremely active Finger Lakes region, where a SUNY Works pilot site and an active STEM hub are leading drivers for success.
The Rochester Museum & Science Center looks forward to hosting the Finger Lakes STEM Hub Video Contest Award Gala on April 30th, where the winners of the contest will be revealed. At the beginning of March, youth from grades 3 to 12 in the Finger Lakes region submitted videos, working individually or in teams with two or three other students, plus an adult mentor or adviser. The videos must be no longer than 3 minutes long, must explore a topic in science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics, and must show how STEM impacts the world today and in the future.
A panel of community leaders and educators, including SUNY Brockport alum, Glenn Johnson, will judge the videos. Winners will be announced in three categories: grades 3-6, grades 7-9, and grades 10-12. First prize in each category is $500, while second place winners will take home $100 and third place will pocket $50.

SUNY Works News
In SUNY Works news, faculty members from Onondaga Community College have submitted applications to the college’s Career and Applied Learning Center for the newly-established Summer 2013 Cooperative Education/Internship Development Fellowships. The Cooperative Education Fellows will engage in activities related to establishing and strengthening paid cooperative education (co-op) and internship opportunities for students in their programs. Up to seven fellows will be awarded $1,000 to develop plans to partner with business and industry, enhance the co-op/internship curriculum for students, and pilot a co-op/internship project for at least two students in their program in the Fall 2013 semester.

This Friday sophomores and juniors from Rochester area high schools will come together at the Rochester Institute of Technology for The Youth Workforce Innovations Conference. The conference provides 10th and 11th grade students the opportunity to gain exposure to growing career fields in the Rochester region. More than 100 students are expected to attend the event and participate in hands-on workshops about careers in alternative energy, biotechnology, the hospitality and service management industry, information technology and opportunities in nanotechnology and the optics and imaging science fields.
