In case you haven’t heard, online courses aren’t so uncommon anymore. In fact, 30% of college students in the US have enrolled in at least one online course.
If you are one of the 70% who hasn’t enrolled because you thought online courses wouldn’t work for you, you may want to think twice. Open SUNY courses offer a little bit of everything – there are over 5,000 courses alone this semester!
If you’re still contemplating what courses you should take this semester, consider these our recommendations for 10 classes you never thought you could take online:
1. Olympics via Film
The 2014 Sochi Olympics may have only been last year, but if you’re already looking forward to Rio 2016, this is a great class to start. SUNY Plattsburgh offers a unique perspective offering this undergraduate class – at an hour north of Lake Placid, site of the 1932 and 1980 winter Olympic Games – they are in the backyard of elite winter sports and athletes. So, even if you’re taking this online class from sunny Miami, you’ll have the Olympic spirit with you!
2. Android Mobile Development
If you’re like most people, you are probably addicted to your smartphone, know the differences between each model, and have an app for just about everything. But, you may not necessarily know how those apps and operating systems are built. This class gives you the chance to build those mobile apps from the ground up for credit. From there, who knows where a simple app can take you?
3. Fitness Walking
Was one of your New Year’s resolutions to get in shape? This class will help you do that and earn some credit for school in the process. If you’re feeling really inspired, there are many more health and wellness classes being offered this Spring online at SUNY campuses.
4. Bar and Beverage Management
Ever have that moment where you turn to a friend and decide you want to go into business together? Well, it may not be as easy as it sounds, but it can become more manageable if you learn about some aspects of the business first. And with any luck, your good business venture will become a great one.
5. Color and Cosmetics
Don’t let the name of this class fool you – it’s not a traditional make-up class. This is actually a class for mortuary science students to learn how to make the recently deceased appear more lifelike for remembrance services. While a subject not for the faint of heart, students in these programs are using the knowledge from this class and others to help grieving families through difficult times.

6. Disney Magic and the American Dream
The title alone says it all – this might have been the school subject of your dreams when you were a kid! Whether you’re a complete Disney lover or not, there is something for everyone in this class – film criticism, brand management, culture, politics, technology, globalization, and international relations. It may just be the “Most Magical Class on Earth.”
7. Geometry & the Art of Design
Don’t let the title of this class give you math nightmares. Here, students learn how to use geometry to create more interesting art installations and design pieces. Playing with knots and mazes are highly encouraged!

8. Speechwriting
We are right in the middle of prime speech season – President Obama outlined the State of the Union on Tuesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo delivered his State of the State Address on Wednesday, and, Chancellor Nancy Zimpher gave her State of the University Address on Friday. If those speeches have inspired you to do greater things in life, speechwriting could be your calling. You will learn to write, critique, and revise different kinds of speeches, as well as critique some of the most famous speeches in history. And who knows, maybe we’ll be hearing your words some day!
9. Literature of the Sea
Yo ho, mateys! Ok, so this class won’t be all pirate stories, but you will read stories of war, peacetime, and adventure at the high sea. Landlubbers – be warned!
10. Music and Political Action
Sometimes there is nothing more emblematic of a revolution than music. More than just protest songs, students will learn about the events that inspired and enraged musical artists and everyday people in the middle of political and social turmoil.

Care of Green Spaces
Are you environmentally conscious? Do you care about how buildings and products affect the environment when they are being designed? Then this might be the right class for you. This Open SUNY+ course teaches you important factors that need to be considered when designing green buildings and spaces – how do protect against noise and light? What are the best plants to use? Using these skills, you’ll be able to help design and protect some of these precious natural spaces.
