SUNY’s number one focus is student success. Following a successful start to the SUNY Reconnect program in Fall 2025, SUNY is expanding resources to make sure adult learners have the tools they need to achieve their goals. With the start of the Spring 2026 semester, find out how SUNY’s community colleges are preparing for the return of SUNY Reconnect.
What is SUNY Reconnect?
SUNY Reconnect offers free community college for eligible New York adults aged 25 to 55 with no prior degree. Open to New York State residents, students can learn in-demand skills for jobs in growing fields like health care, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing for free if they don’t already have a college degree.
How are SUNY Community Colleges Supporting Retention and Success for Adult Learners?
As community colleges prepare for spring, SUNY and its campuses are focusing on advising and navigation, enrollment support, targeted outreach, and credit for prior learning.
Advising and Navigation
From enrollment through completion, adult learners benefit from personalized, continuous guidance.
Campuses are hiring or expanding roles such as:
- Adult learner coordinators
- Success coaches
- Navigators
Enrollment Support
SUNY helps students from the start. Before classes even begin, 16 campuses are expanding efforts to help students enroll. Newly appointed admissions, financial aid specialists and retention staff help:
- Streamline onboarding
- Clarify academic and financial aid requirements
- Support adult learners through complex enrollment processes
Targeted Outreach
SUNY campuses are expanding marketing efforts to engage adult learners, spread awareness of the program, and highlight the adult learner community on campus.
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) and Faster Completion:
Recognizing prior learning helps adult learners progress efficiently. SUNY community colleges are improving Credit for Prior Learning processes through faculty training, improved evaluation tools, and system enhancements that support consistent and timely CPL awards. Strengthened CPL practices reduce time to completion and help adult learners stay on track
