Beginning Monday, November 26, SUNY will be pinning stories of giving, service, and kindness originating from each of our 64 campuses and the communities that these schools are a part of.
With over 467,000 students, SUNY consistently takes advantage of the opportunity it has to be a significant impact in communities across New York State. The 30 Days of Giving campaign is a great way to recognize students and community partners involved in the many projects that happen all year round at each SUNY campus and their surrounding communities. The byproduct of taking volunteerism to scale is not only building character in our students themselves as they join our over three million alumni, but also to set an example of impact as the nation’s largest university system.

Day 5
Stony Brook University
Superstorm Sandy devastated communities across Long Island. Tragically, lives were lost during and in the aftermath of Sandy, including a beloved Stony Brook student. Thousands more lost their homes and belongings and again, many students, faculty and staff were among them.
An outpouring of support from Stony Brook University students, faculty and staff continues to help Long Islanders rebuild. They have partnered with local charitable organizations such as Island Harvest, Long Island Cares, New York Cares, The American Red Cross, and other agencies to collect and distribute food, clothing, cleaning supplies, and personal care items. Volunteers walked door to door with National Grid in communities without power to distribute free batteries, flashlights and blankets. They also partnered with the Long Island Volunteer Center, NECHAMA – Jewish Response to Disaster and the Mastic Beach Fire Department to clear and sort debris, and tear out walls and carpeting from homes destroyed by flooding. And one of their recent alums, Tom Kohler, 26, who is originally from New Rochelle and now a professional baseball player with the Miami Marlins, has established a fundraiser to be held on Stony Brook’s Joe Nathan Field on Saturday, December 1st from noon until 4 p.m.
